A Brief Respite From the Rain

After endless days & weeks of rain, we had almost an hour of sun yesterday. The day lilies, which have just now finally blossomed, were perfect & lush and still covered with rain drops. On my way back from a meeting I found huge, tangled patches of them on the banks of the Connecticut River on a back road in Hadley, Massachusetts. The light was hazy, but warm and it became, at least for an hour, a wonderful summer afternoon.

“… if one looks long enough at almost anything, looks with absolute attention at a flower, a stone, the bark of a tree, grass, snow, a cloud, something like revelation takes place. Something is “given,” and perhaps that something is always a reality outside the self.”
